Use a gentle cleanser
Skin 101 is getting the right cleanser. “If your skin is fairly spot-free, opt for a simple light cream for cleansing, such as aqueous cream or Dermol,” says dermatologist Dr Friedmann, “but if you want to tackle whitehead outbreaks, acid-based face washes are useful.”
Keep skin hydrated
“Moisturisers add a waterproof coating onto the skin, thereby reducing evaporative loss of water from the skin,' says Dr Friedmann. “If moisturisers are too thin, they will evaporate very quickly and leave skin dryer. So, the thicker the cream, the better it hydrates.”
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, which give a dull and dry complexion. Scrubbing the surface exposes the brighter skin underneath—but be gentle when exfoliating, as harsh scrubs can be irritating.
Easier said than done… but lowering your stress levels can have a huge impact on your complexion. “Stress can cause hormones to fluctuate and increase oil production, leading to a flare up,” says Dr Friedmann.
Sleep deprivation significantly raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol, too. “Getting plenty of sleep will have a positive effect on your immune system,” says Dr Friedmann, “and 'a healthy immune system minimises the risk of a flare-up.”
